A famous Jewish story of giving:
Just before Passover, in a little shtetle in Europe a poor man came to
his rabbi with a question.
Rabbi, at my seder, is it OK to make
the blessing over the four cups with milk instead of wine?
The rabbi went to his funds and gave
the man much more money than was needed for wine. After the man left,
the rabbis assistant asked him, Why did you give him so much?
That was much more money than he needed
for wine! The rabbi answered, If he was going to make the blessing over
milk, that means he also didn't have money for meat to eat at the
holiday meal.
People who need charity usually feel
ashamed that they are in a position of need, so giving with sensitivity
is important.
We do our best to give in a way that is
dignified for all concerned.
